Assignment Overview

Reflect on the state of things for student-athletes and athletic programs today in the wake of this new NIL landscape, and decide what your opinion is on the whole situation. In that decision, you should consider both the situation now, even with rules and policies still being decided, and the situation that you anticipate in the future, based on how things are currently proceeding.

Some Points to Consider:

  • Is it fair that the majority of NIL deals go to male athletes in football, and, to a lesser degree, basketball?
  • Is it fair that female athletes (in general) make nowhere near the amount that male athletes do?
  • Has the power of NIL collectives corrupted college sports?
  • Is it a problem that athletes frequently transfer from 1 institution to the next in pursuit of larger financial packages?
  • Should athletes in less popular or less visible sports be left out of NIL conversations entirely?
  • Is the new landscape proposed under the House vs. NCAA settlement causing more harm than good to athletic programs across the nation (think of roster size, the $20.5 million salary cap, funding shortages, etc.)?
