SMCCCD is committed to engaging its students, faculty, and staff on environmental awareness and sustainability initiatives. Sustainability is communicated through various District-wide and campus in-person and media channels.
Designed for the Future: 80 Practical Ideas for a Sustainable World asks American and international landscape architects, architects, planners, urban designers, policymakers, writers, and sustainable designers to answer the question in five hundred words or less. Each person outlines how a project or design practice, historic or contemporary, has created a more positive relationship between the built and natural environments, and helps solve the complex social, economic, and environmental challenges facing twenty-first-century communities.
The direction of higher education is at a cross roads against a background of mounting sustainability related issues and uncertainties. This book seeks to inspire positive change in higher education by exploring the rich notion of the sustainable university and illustrating pathways through which its potential can be realised.
How does a university restructure its myriad activities, maintain its academic integrity, and have a transformative impact off campus? And, who ought to participate in the conversations that frame and guide both the internal restructuring process and the off-campus interactions? The perspective of this book, based on research and projects in the field, is that long-term, sustainable social and economic development requires strategies geared to the scientific, technical, cultural, and environmental aspects of development.
